Have you ever got ready to make some homemade chili cheese fries or a buttery baked potato, reach in the ole Idaho sack and pull out a spud that looks like a creepy monster?
WAIT! Don’t freak out! Don’t throw them away! Cut those ugly monsters in half and replant them in a bucket with potting soil. By the end of the growing season you’ll have a whole new big sack of taters.
How to grow your own potatoes
Here, I’ll show you how:
1. Cut the potatoes in half, but be sure to leave at least one eye on each half.
2. Choose a large bucket or container. The bigger the container, the more potatoes you’ll produce. We’ve chosen a 5 gallon bucket and we’ll plant only 2 or 3 cuttings per bucket.
3. Drill holes for drainage.
4. Fill the bucket with about four inches of potting soil and lay the potato cuttings with the eyes facing upward toward the top of the bucket.
5. Cover the cuttings with about two inches of soil.
6. Water thoroughly and then place your bucket in a sunny spot.
You’ll know when it’s time to harvest because the plants that grow will starting turning yellow and will begin to die off. When you see that happening, you can empty your bucket and gather your new potatoes. This process takes a few months don’t forget about your buckets in the meantime, be sure to water frequently.
