The swarm process really isn’t as scary as it looks. When a honeybee colony swarms that’s an act of reproduction. When the queen has decided that it is time to divide the colony, she sends a signal to the worker bees to raise a new queen. The old queen leaves with half of the worker bee population to find a new home. On their way to their new home, they sometimes gather in a tree or on a fence. This is the part that freaks most people out, but they are only pausing for a moment to send out some scouts who will go out and look for a new suitable home.
Despite what most people think, honeybees are the most docile during this time because they have no hive to defend. They have no reason to attack – in fact, if they start attacking they could put the queen in danger and will lose every worker bee that stings. They can’t afford to do that at a time when they need every bee to rebuild a new home.
In other words, a swarm won’t harm anyone if left alone – the bees are just house hunting.
So if you see a swarm, call us for a free bee removal and we’ll help them find a new loving home.
